TAKE COMMAND

You aren’t simply steering a submarine. You’re commanding one.

Every turn presents another decision. Choose your depth. Manage nuclear power and missile fuel. Allocate your crew. Plot your movement. Track contacts. Assess damage. Decide whether to attack, evade, repair, resupply — or disappear beneath the surface and run silent.

Your operations area spans 18 by 22 kilometers. Somewhere out there are enemy destroyers, submarines, mines, hazards, and two precious supply ships.

Your mission is simple:

Eliminate the enemy. Survive long enough to do it.

Simple missions rarely make simple battles.

HUNT

The Nautilus gives you options.

Torpedoes can reach targets kilometers away, but every shot consumes power and ammunition.

Missiles deliver devastating attacks across the battlefield, destroying everything in the target area and the surrounding waters.

Sonar and the situation display help you understand what is happening around you — when the equipment is working and the ocean isn’t hiding something.

And sometimes the best weapon isn’t launched from a tube at all.

Send frogmen equipped with limpet mines after nearby enemy ships and hope everyone comes home.

Every attack is a decision.

Every decision costs something.

DISAPPEAR

Sometimes winning means making sure the enemy can’t find you.

Take the Nautilus deep enough, reduce your activity, and run silent. Enemy destroyers may lose contact, giving your crew precious time to evade an overwhelming force or repair a badly damaged submarine.

But depth creates dangers of its own.

Weapons have safe operating depths. Surface ships become hazards near the surface. Go too deep and the pressure itself becomes your enemy.

The ocean can protect you.

It can also kill you.

MANAGE THE BOAT

Combat is only part of your problem.

The Nautilus depends on interconnected systems, limited resources, and a crew that must somehow keep everything operating while the enemy is trying to sink you.

Manage:

• Nuclear power
• Missile fuel
• Torpedoes and missiles
• Crew availability
• Engine power and speed
• Depth and ballast
• Sonar and tactical information
• Damage and repairs
• Resupply operations

Power can be converted into missile fuel. Missile fuel can be converted back into power. Damaged systems may fail when you need them most. Supply ships can replenish your boat — assuming the enemy doesn’t find them first.

And every unnecessary turn costs you points.

The question isn’t simply whether an order will work.

It’s whether you can afford to give it.

NO TWO PATROLS ARE THE SAME

Subversion doesn’t lead you through a scripted campaign.

Enemy behavior, attacks, damage, sabotage attempts, weapons effectiveness, and the fortunes of your crew are driven by the underlying systems that made the original game unpredictable.

A plan that worked beautifully last time may get your boat blown out of the water this time.

As the difficulty rises, so does the enemy’s strength and aggression.

At the lower ranks, you may ask:

“How fast can I destroy them?”

At the highest ranks, the question becomes:

“How do I survive long enough to win?”

You can surrender — although Captain Byte’s Bit Shop strongly discourages such behavior.

Or, when there is absolutely nothing left to lose…

There’s always self-destruct.

The Nautilus’s reactor makes a remarkably convincing final argument.
